The Los Angeles Lakers’ biggest goal this summer will be to trade Russell Westbrook. That’s a lot easier said than done, though, because Westbrook’s value as a business asset is non-existent with his lackluster play and $47.1 million salary next season.
That being said, crazier things have happened in the NBA and there could be a team talking about Westbrook, whether it’s this summer or next deadline season.
While there are myriad reasons to trade Westbrook at any given time, there aren’t many outlets that look at the reasons. versus trade the former MVP. Some fans may not think there is any reasons to keep Westbrook, but there are certainly factors the Lakers need to consider.
3 reasons against the Los Angeles Lakers trading Russell Westbrook:
1. It could cost one, or even two, first-round picks
As mentioned, Westbrook doesn’t have much trade value and if the Los Angeles Lakers are going to move away from him, they’ll probably have to find a team that’s willing to accept him on a salary dump deal.
These trades aren’t free, however, as teams often need to reach at least one first-round pick to make them. We can be optimistic all we want about Westbrook’s trade value, but the reality of the situation is that neither team is calling. for Westbrook and if they take that massive payday, they’ll need picks in return.
In the extremely the unlikely event that the Lakers can trade Westbrook without also trading picks, this further balances the scales in favor of his trade. With the spikes attached, this can be a tough pill to swallow.
