SCUSD teachers’ strike hampers region’s sports

The athletic program was halted due to the Sacramento City Unified School District teachers’ strike. Three SCUSD high schools – Kennedy, McClatchy and Burbank – are participating in the Metro conference alongside Grant, Laguna Creek, River City and Monterey Trail. Due to the strike, none of the SCUSD coaches have been able to organize their athletic programs since the labor dispute began on March 23.

Rosemont, also an SCUSD high school, competes in the Sierra Valley Conference, while Hiram Johnson and West Campus are part of the Greater Sacramento League.

Laguna Creek athletic director Jon Ussery said Metro Conference games involving an SCUSD school were recorded as “no contest.”

But that upset Ussery.

“We’re canceling games now because adults in this district can’t make decisions,” he told the Citizen and the Sacramento Bee.
