Did NBA 2K disrespect Jamal Murray with his new ranking?

Recently, Denver Nuggets point guard Jamal Murray asked to see his overall rating in the new NBA 2K22. His response was found on Twitter when acclaimed 2k digital marketing director Ronnie 2K responded to Murray’s tweet.

Ronnie has announced that Jamal’s new overall ranking is an 85 and Nuggets fans know that rating can most certainly be argued.

Before Murray’s injury, he was sitting comfortably at 86 overall, and the Denver Nuggets were playing some of their best basketball of the season after acquiring Aaron Gordon before the trade deadline.

That all changed on April 12 for the Nuggets when Murray tore his ACL playing at Chase Center against the Golden State Warriors. His season unfortunately ended with an average of 21.2 points, 4.8 assists and four rebounds.

But Jamal does more on the pitch than the numbers you see on paper. He’s improved his defensive game and demands that the NBA‘s defenses focus on him, resulting in more shots for his teammates on the ground. His leadership and basketball IQ also surged with the help of Nikola Jokic.

Over the years, Jamal’s 2K rating has improved. During his rookie year, he started off with an overall rating of 75. After showing a promising rookie season, 2K showed his respect and propelled Murray to 80 overall. He continued to increase his score by two points in his third and fourth years and ended up reaching 86 overall in 2K21.

The argument for Jamal’s rating to be upped may be made after seeing his performance in the NBA bubble when he averaged 31.6 points in the first round against the Utah Jazz, coming back from 3-1 (twice ) and scoring 50 points without a single free. attempting to pitch in the playoffs is not something you see everyday NBA players. Jamal Murray showed the world what he can do during the 2019-20 playoffs.

The most confusing part of his new 2K22 rating is the fact that he saw a drop in the rating possibly due to his injury, says 2K Ronnie.

At the very least, Jamal can agree that he is going in the wrong direction for whatever reason. It doesn’t make much sense to decrease the number of players overall due to an injury he hasn’t even had the chance to play on since that April day.

If we look at Klay Thompson though, he hasn’t been healthy enough to play the past two seasons and has stayed at a consistent 88 level without a drop in ratings. Therefore, 2K paid no attention to adding dimension to Klay’s injury like they did with Murray’s.

So what should Jamal’s rating be according to a Nuggets fan? After watching almost every professional game Murray has played and his recent NBA success, I think Murray should have an 88 overall with how explosive his offensive play is night after night. After asking to defend the best guards in every game in 2020-21, his defense has even improved a lot more than some expected last season.

For Jamal, that 85 rating only fuels the fire and motivation he needs to recover from his ACL injury. His lower half of his body should be stronger than ever after suffering one of the most difficult injuries to rehabilitate in professional sport. Expect great things from Jamal in the future.
