European Union urged to end live piracy to protect sport and culture

More than 100 companies, leagues, federations and other organizations have signed a call for action to encourage the European Union to take action to deal adequately with the the issue of live piracy in order to protect creativity, sport and culture.

The following statement has been sent to the EU.

“We, the undersigned, call on the European Union to tackle the problem of piracy and in particular the piracy of live content. Piracy has and continues to drain Europe’s creative and cultural ecosystems, sports and entertainment sectors alive, depriving workers and industries of billions in annual revenue and undermining the sustainability of an essential part of our social and economic fabric.

“We call on the European Commission to provide a legislative instrument to tackle the piracy of live content as a firm commitment from the European executive branch to address this problem with adequate measures. In particular, ensuring that notified illegal content is removed immediately and blocked before the end of the live event.

“In doing so, we recall that these measures build on the existing body of European and national legislation to provide effective tools to combat and disable piracy networks. Networks incorporating a number of criminal operators who use hacking as a means of laundering earnings from illegal activities.

“It is Europe’s duty to protect and promote its creative and cultural workforce and its leading industrial base in the world, as well as to protect consumers from the risks associated with piracy.

“Any non-legislative instrument would be inadequate and insufficient to deal with the magnitude of the problem. Only a European-wide regulation could provide an appropriate response.

“We encourage the European Commission to act firmly and quickly to propose such an instrument.”
