#TurksandCaicos, July 16, 2022 – In early June, the Turks and Caicos Islands Sports Commission (TCISC) revealed the launch of the Police Action League (PAL), a youth sports league aimed at promoting positive relationships between law enforcement officers and youth in the community. This will be done through educational programs, sports and recreational opportunities.
This strategic partnership between the TCISC, the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF) and the Ministry of Education, aims to target young people with adverse childhood experiences (ACE) and juvenile delinquency while promoting the teamwork, upholding citizenship and providing opportunities to work with the law. law enforcement officers and caring adult mentors.
TCISC Director Jarrett Forbes said, “PAL is a safe space and nurturing environment that builds peaceful communities and positively impacts the health and well-being of young people…PAL believes they can help channel our people in a positive way by empowering our young people to become responsible Life Choices. The philosophy of the program is to have a positive impact on the lives of young people in the community. The key to change for these young people and their families is to provide a safe space that helps encourage quality character and positive development through athletic, academic and mentorship programs.
This year, PAL is hosting two sports: softball for girls and basketball for boys. PAL is supported by the TCI Basketball Federation and the Softball Federation who help run the program. It also replaces the Youth Basketball League held last year, with improved and improved performance.
The 3-month league runs from August 6 to October 22, 2022 in Providenciales and resumes in Grand Turk in early 2023. Registration is now open and participants pay a low fee of $20, including their uniforms and participating in the league.
Once registered, there will be a PAL draft where players will be chosen to play on different teams.
Although PAL’s goal is to facilitate the protection and mentoring of children from disadvantaged backgrounds, it is not just an intervention, but a holistic, enriching and enjoyable experience for young people. The opportunity is open to RTCIPF officers and community volunteers to provide mentorship to PAL participants.
Superintendent Dwight Gardiner said, “PAL is a perfect example of community policing. At the grassroots level, community policing is about building partnerships with the community and other stakeholders to identify issues or areas of intervention and come up with methods to address those issues…PAL aligns with goals by working working closely with schools and building strong communities through partnerships. The objective of the police strategies expressed by Gardiner is to identify problems of delinquency at an early stage and to prevent them from becoming advanced criminals, while finding lasting intervention structures.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police expressed passionately: ‘I would say the reactive approach hasn’t worked and won’t work, we have to be proactive. What we do [PAL] is essential…we will continue to put our money where our mouth is police. Adams went on to reveal that the RTCIPF is also demanding greater discipline in the music business, buying instruments.
In Hon. On the absence of Rachel Taylor’s minister responsible for sport and education, Permanent Secretary for Education Wesley Clerveaux said: “They always say opportunities don’t happen, you create them. This Police Action League is consistent with our Strategic objective 4 youth policy, creating safe spaces, communities and peaceful environments for our young people. It is critical that we empower our youth, and indeed that can happen through this initiative. »
