Knicks vs 76ers – Game Recap – November 8, 2021

PHILADELPHIA – – Julius Randle scored 31 points, including eight consecutive in a key fourth-quarter streak, to lead the New York Knicks to a 103-96 victory over the shorthanded Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night.

Philadelphia was without quadruple All-Star Joel Embiid and three others due to NBA health and safety protocols, which are for players who have tested positive for COVID-19 or have been in close contact with a person tested positive.

RJ Barrett added 15 points for the Knicks, who have won their second in the last five.

“He was a monster all around, the way the game started, the energy he played with, he set the tone defensively,” Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said of Randle, who also took 12 rebounds. “When he plays like that, it makes us a different team.”

Andre Drummond started in place of Embiid and had 14 points and 25 rebounds. Furkan Korkmaz added 19 points for Philadelphia, which ended a six-game winning streak.

The Knicks were leading up to 19 points in the first half and looked on the verge of collapse, but Philadelphia used a 25-14 third quarter to move closer to 72-69 heading into the fourth. The 76ers have come close several times in the last period, the latest on a 3-point Georges Niang with 5:01 to go, bringing the score to 89-88.

Then Randle took over. He converted a driving layup, then a pair of 3s, the second giving the Knicks a 97-91 lead with 2:54 to go.

“I just took what the game gave me,” Randle said. “These are the times I want.”

New York took a comfortable 100-91 lead over Kemba Walker’s three-point play with 2:19 remaining.

“The game could have gotten away from us in the first half and it didn’t,” 76ers coach Doc Rivers said. “We stuck in there. “

ESPN, citing sources, reported earlier Monday that Embiid had tested positive for COVID-19. Neither the 76ers nor Rivers would confirm this. Rivers said ahead of Monday’s game that Embiid was “in trouble”.

“It’s not going so well. He struggles with it. Similar to Tobias (Harris), ”Rivers said. “It’s clearly a concern.”

Embiid is the fourth member of the 76ers, leader of the Eastern Conference, sidelined during COVID-19 protocols, joining Harris, Matisse Thybulle and Isaiah Joe. Rivers said an anonymous staff member was also absent.

Embiid, who missed his second game of the season on Monday, is averaging 21.4 points and 9.4 rebounds. Embiid also sat on November 1 to rest.

In addition to Drummond and Korkmaz, Philadelphia’s Fortune five top five included Danny Green, Seth Curry, and Tyrese Maxey.
