Playing in Simcoe Thursday in a four-team Central Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association playoff, the Trojans first beat Walkerton’s Sacred Heart High School 56-13 and Simcoe’s Holy Trinity Catholic High School 47-16. to reserve their place at the provincial championship.

The OFSAA Championships will take place November 25-17 in Niagara Falls.

North Park team members include Kennedy Little, Stephanie Romany, Jordan Kingshott, Asha Grewal, Brenna Mitchell, Alisha MacDonald, Molly Adams, Myah Ciommo, Avery Lombardi and Jaya Grewal.

SJC volleyball team qualifies for OFSAA

The St. John’s College Green Eagles senior men’s volleyball team will compete in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AAA Championships.

Facing Owen Sound District High School in a one-game playoff Thursday, SJC won in straight sets to advance to the provincial championship.

OFSAA will take place November 25-27 in Kingston.

Jones to the nationals

Jacob Jones of Brantford will represent Ontario at the New Holland World Junior Curling Championship qualifier Nov. 22-27 in Saskatoon.

The Mohawk College student is Team Mitchell’s fifth at the event.

The winner of the New Holland event qualifies for the 2022 Canadian Under-21 Championship which will take place in Stratford from March 25 to April 1. This event determines who represents Canada at the World Junior Championships in 2023.

Jones, 20, is the captain of the Mohawk team. He won the Ontario Colleges Athletic Athletic Association silver medal while also qualifying for the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Championship.

Pomponio is part of the All-Academic team

Olivia Pomponio of Brantford has been named to the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference varsity team.

Pomponio plays football for the University of Lourdes in Sylvania, Ohio, in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

A graduate of St. John’s College, Pomponio needed a GPA of 3.25 or higher to be named to the team. She just finished her junior season in a red shirt playing 19 games for the Gray Wolves.

Hear outside the cut line

It did not appear on Friday afternoon that Brantford’s David Hearn would play this weekend in the PGA Tour’s RSM Classic.

After opening the event Thursday with a 68 four-under at Sea Island Golf Course (Plantation) in Georgia, Hearn was three above par on 14 holes on Friday playing on the Seaside course.

With the cut projected to be four under par – and Hearn sitting at one under with four holes to play – his chances of reaching the weekend were not good.

Talor Gooch was the clubhouse’s first leader on Friday, sitting 13 holes under par over 36 holes.

Laurier Sixth Cross Country Team

Laurier Brantford’s women’s cross country team recently competed at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association championship in Calgary, finishing sixth.

The team was led by eighth place Faith Neison. Nieson completed the six-kilometer course in 24 minutes and eight seconds. Nieson was named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association and CCAA Athlete of the Week.

The results of other competitors included Kennedy Finch 41st (26:14), Chiara Carinci 59th (26:50), Kara Hughes 69th (27:13) and Adna Kadrispahic 86th (29:40).

On the men’s side, Jackson Rice finished 49th with a time of 29:34 for 8 km.

Follow the team training at Gretzky

The Athletics International track team has started indoor training at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Center for the winter.

Athletiques International was formed in 1980 by Bruce Burton, who is still involved with the club.

Several runners from Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk are members of the club, including Jason Langst, seven, who recently finished fourth in the 1,000-meter at the Western Ontario Championships in Etobicoke. The club also involved local runners in the CAGE school meet and the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations Cross Country Championships.
